This December the fishing has been as hot as the weather. With warm conditions continuing through the first two weeks of the month we’ve been catching a surprising mix of species. If you are lucky enough to find a calm day or brave enough to fight the waves on the Gulf side, you'll have a chance to catch some of the largest, hardest fighting fish of the year. Running the front of Sanibel looking for birds and schools of bait has produced consistent hookups on tarpon, overslot redfish, false albacore, bluefish, and even the occasional king mackerel. If you are chasing these fish I recommend heavy gear, high capacity spools, 30lb+ braid, 80lb leaders and 6/0 hooks. If you find the birds working an area just throw out a line and hold on!
